Blacks & the Faith

Mother Marie Elizabeth Clarisse Lange
Mother Marie Elizabeth Clarisse Lange was born of Haitian parents in 1784 and died in 1882. She came to Baltimore by ways of Cuba. As a well-educated black young lady she felt prompted by the Spirit to open a school for poor black children and for this purpose to form a religious community of black sisters. Her struggles to achieve this goal, her reliance on divine Providence, her attachment to the church and her zeal for the Gospel as well as her strong will, discipline and austerity of her life mark her as a woman of extraordinary character. The School she founded is still in existence and her community of sisters currently extends their missionary activities in six countries. The canonization case of Mother Lange has been introduced to Rome.
