Mother Josephine Bakhita: the first African woman to be canonized in modern times
A new chapel opened in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C during the end of the 20th century. This spectacular shrine houses numerous small chapels in honor of the Blessed Mother. The recent addition, the Our Lady of Africa chapel, contains a relic of Mother Josephine Bakhita that was sealed in the altar. On October 1, 2000 Mother Josephine Bakhita became the first African woman to be canonized in modern times.
