The Association of Black Psychologists - 43rd Annual International Convention Crystal City, VA July 26 - August 1, 2011
At the convention, students have a unique opportunity to meet and develop relationships with professional Black psychologists and fellow psychology students from across the country in a warm, inviting, and intellectually stimulating atmosphere. Through a host of symposiums, think tanks, panels, and paper/poster presentations, students are exposed to new ideas, theories, research, and interventions related to promoting the well-being of people of African descent. At the convention, students have a variety of meetings, jegnaship (mentoring) activities, and social events designed especially for them to promote their educational and professional development, input into the Association, and support of one another. Lastly, students have lots of fun! Whether it's the student open mike session, luncheon, banquet, or morning meditation/exercise activity, students have plenty of opportunity to decompress from a year of hard work and have a good time!

Gates Millennium Scholars Program - Minority Male Initiative Syracuse University, in collaboration with the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, is hosting an event at Murray Bergtraum High School on Saturday, April 30, 2011 (8:30 am – 11:30 am). Their goal is to have 500 students/parents in attendance. Below is a copy of the program overview provided by GMS.
Program Overview The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program has found a way to gain male students’ attention on the importance of being college ready in their Bridge Builders events. The GMS Bridge Builder events bring together middle and high school males of color, community organizations and Gates Millennium Scholars in forums designed to assist young men in actualizing their potential. Each group will have a specific role to play in the “bridge building” process. The event will be framed around implementing techniques to elevate young men to new heights. Critical points of emphasis will include but are not limited to:
• network building as a means for creating support systems • pride in self • goal setting and goal attainment • the value of education • leadership development and community service • navigation of scholarships and the educational arena
Through these Bridge Builder events and the collaborative efforts of the community, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program will make a positive impact on males of color.
